The star anise plant, Badiana, is an evergreen tropical tree from East Asia that reaches considerable size and belongs to the Magnoliaceae family. It bears fruit after six years, its flowers are white-yellowish, reminiscent of those of the magnolia and appear in summer. They are followed by woody and dark fruits which in dying take the form of an eight-pointed star each containing a shiny seed.
The historical origins of this spice are very ancient, so much so that the virtues of anise are confirmed by the fact that masters of medicine such as Hippocrates, Celsus and Galen already recommended its use against intestinal pain and jaundice. Pliny the Elder, on the other hand, exalted the healing properties in cases of indigestion and insomnia. In ancient Rome, anise, must and cheese were the ingredients of a dessert that was used to cook in bay leaves used in wedding ceremonies. Even today anise is a fundamental spice for Chinese medicine.

The essential oil of Badiana is obtained from the seeds with the steam distillation method and a light straw yellow liquid is obtained which gives off a characteristic scent, tending to sweet.
