SPICES, DRUGS AND HERBS

Spices are seeds, fruits, roots, barks or vegetable substances used in negligible quantities from a nutritional point of view as additives to give flavor to a food. In ancient times the use of spices was widespread among the Egyptians, already around 2600 BC spiced foods were provided to the workers employed in the construction of the pyramid of Cheops, the purpose was to keep the workers in strength, it was believed that adding spices protected from epidemics. In the Ebers papyrus (written around the sixteenth century BC) numerous remedies based on aromatic herbs and spices are described and among the archaeological finds there are traces of anise, fenugreek, cardamom, cassia, cumin, dill and saffron. Already at this time most of the spices came from India.

In the ancient and medieval world they were among the most valuable products, which alone justified the opening of new trade routes. Spices were the main reason why the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama opened the route to India, and they were also one of the reasons that prompted Christopher Columbus to seek a quick and safe route to the Indies. Columbus looked for financiers who were attracted by the possibility of having new spices to trade.
