Red Juniper is known above all because Gin is obtained by distillation of its macerated fruits, while an essential oil, called Cade oil, is obtained from the wood, also by distillation, which has important properties in the treatment of many skin diseases. It is a useful remedy for eczema, for psoriasis, for acneic forms characterized by a strong greasiness of the skin.
A few centuries ago Cade oil was used in the treatment of corneal opacities and, as a dental analgesic: it was placed in the cavities of the teeth. It was also used against snake bites, and was even used as a contraceptive, applying it to the penis before sexual intercourse. Until recently it was used in the production of smoked sausages.

The essential oil is obtained from the direct distillation of wood. The distillate is left to rest for 15-20 days, during which it separates into three layers: a lower layer of tar, an aqueous intermediate and an oily upper layer, which is what is used. It is a reddish brown or blackish oil with an intense smoky aroma.
The oil can then be further rectified by steam distillation
